South Africa: Anti-rhino poaching SWAT teams needed Right AWAY

JOHANNESBURG: The ACDP urged the government yesterday to create a special weapons and tactics (Swat) team to curb rhino poaching. “Game wardens patrol their properties day and night, but are not equipped to stand against sophisticated criminals in helicopters, wearing bullet- proof vests and armed with AK-47s,” African Christian Democratic Party MP Cheryllyn Dudley said in a statement.

“The ACDP urges government to facilitate closer co-operation between the SA Police Service, the environmental crime investigation and air services unit, the ministry of environmental affairs and the parks board to ensure a sophisticated wildlife crime Swat team with the capacity and dedication to combat this barbaric crime.” Dudley was reacting to reports that poachers, with the aid of a helicopter, raided the Krugersdorp game reserve and removed two rhino horns with chain saws. The two animals were left for dead.
