Kitti’s Hog-nosed Bat, Craseonycteris thonglongyai, is listed as ‘VULNERABLE’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM. Also known as the Bumblebee Bat, this tiny species from west-central Thailand and south-east Myanmar, is the world’s smallest known mammal and the only member of the family Craseonycteridae.
Since its discovery in the 1970s, Kitti’s Hog-nosed Bat has come under threat from human disturbance, fertilizer collection and tourism. Another serious threat arises from the burning of forest near bat caves, which destroys critical foraging habitat, while proposals to extract limestone from caves inhabited by this species could also be highly destructive.
Kitti’s Hog-nosed Bats occur within Sai Yok National Park, which offers some protection. A Conservation Action Plan was created for the species in 2001, and recommends actions for its conservation. These recommendations include monitoring, providing incentives to local people to maintain essential habitat, and identifying and protecting key cave roosts.
