Mara Diaries: Young rhinos, lions climbing trees, paradise pride hunting hippos and no cubs in sight..

These two males have been seen lately up on rhino ridge. There are many biting flies around particularly the louse flies and a biting Musca called Stomoxys Calcitran and if these are in large infestations lion can be stressed, shown in the photo was one male lion trying to get up that tree, to get away from them, in the end it gave up and ran off.

Two  young black rhinos were spotted on Paradise Plains. These young rhinos really like eating Capparis Tormentosa also known as the woolley caper bush native to africa.

The Paradise Pride of lions had a busy day yesterday, 4 adult females & 2 young cubs were seen feeding on a hippo kill near the wildebeest crossing point. Notch and his 3 sons were seen across the mara river wanting to cross but they seemed very wary of all the crocodiles that were around, later we found the males on the kill too so they must have found a way to get across un harmed.

The female with the four cubs we wrote about few days ago is a young female of about three years old, she is now presumed part of the Paradise pride and some guides here think that perhaps she was one of the old Marsh pride females that moved out when Claude and Romeo came in. Very sadly yesterday some guides saw her minus the cubs and she was with one of the males that is part of the Notch group!! These four male brothers are large males all have big heads just like their father one is pictured here, there were no cubs to be seen. But the grass is long at present so seeing the cubs could be tricky or the worst has happened.

Have a GREAT weekend and stay tuned for more exciting updates from the heart of the Masai Mara …….
